Last year, our PTSA Staff Representatives and our Principal came to the Enatai PTSA Board requesting funding to help teachers purchase culturally responsive books to add to their classroom libraries.

Why are culturally responsive books so important? Classroom books and other materials should represent the interests of the students and reflect the diversity of students within the classroom. However, until the recent past, it was not uncommon to find classrooms completely void of reading materials that either were written by African American, Latino, or Asian authors or which prominently featured the lively and rich histories of the diverse cultures represented in the school. Thanks to donations from parents and our community, Enatai PTSA was able to provide $15,000 of funding for grade level appropriate books for each classroom.

Did you know that this year's Enatai Eagles Academic Adventure includes a Literacy Adventure? The Literacy adventure stickers were sent home in backpacks with the Enatai Eagle Academic Adventure Album. If your student hasn't read a book to earn this sticker, you can download a list of culturally responsive books that Enatai teachers were able to purchase through the combined efforts of the school and the PTSA.   Contact academicadventure@enataiptsa.org if you have questions regarding the Enatai Eagles Academic Adventure programs.

Parents, do you have a favorite childhood book you would like to recommend for Enatai's collection of culturally responsive books?  Contact your teacher if there is a title you would like to share with your child's class.
